Outstanding Graduates

Tampa Bay Christian Academy is proud to recognize our many outstanding graduates and former students. Their achievements are the fruition of our purpose, "Inspiring the Heart. Educating for Life."  

Garrett Johnson

A member of the class of 2002, Garrett was a high school and college track star. He was among 32 students selected as Rhodes Scholars in 2006. On June 16, after leading his FSU Seminoles to its first-ever Outdoor Track and Field national championship, indoor and outdoor shot put national champion and four-time All-American Johnson was tabbed the Division I Outdoor Men's Field Co-Athlete of the Year. He shared the honor with USC high jumper Jesse Williams. Florida State's Johnson climaxed an outstanding season with a sweep of the indoor and outdoor shot put titles. He hit 66'7" (20.29m) at the outdoor championship and earlier in the season, he set a Penn Relays record by throwing 68-4½. He won Atlantic Coast Conference and East Region titles in the shot and also placed fifth in the NCAA discus. Johnson earned NCAA East Region Field Athlete of the Year with a pair of all-region performances in the shot put and the discus. A junior athletically, Johnson will skip his final season of collegiate track to accept a Rhodes Scholarship. He also led Florida State to their first NCAA Indoor Track and Field national championship in 11 years.

David Grantham

David's history at Tampa Baptist Academy began in K4 in Mrs. Springer's class until his 12th grade graduation in 2000. While at TBCA he lettered in soccer, baseball and basketball, was a member of National Honor Society and at graduation received the American Legion Award. David went on to USF where he majored in history and joined the Air Force ROTC. While in the Air Force ROTC, David was chosen as wing commander responsible for the detachment of over 225 cadets and was awarded Cadet of the Year for 2003 by the Tampa Chamber of Commerce. He was commissioned into the Air Force in 2004 as a Distinguished Graduate ranking him in the top 5 percent of all ROTC cadets commissioned that year. Following graduation, David has been stationed at Ellsworth Base in South Dakota as an Operations Officer for the Air Force Office of Special Investigations. He was deployed to Kuwait, Afghanistan and Iraq as Operations Officer in support of the Air Force Office of Special Investigations from January 2006 to July 2006. He is presently back in South Dakota waiting for his next assignment.

Captain Kenneth S. Bode

After graduating as Valedictorian of the Tampa Baptist 1995 graduating class, Ken attended the United States Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, CO. He received a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry and was honored as a Distinguised Graduate in 1999 ranking 41 out of 1100 cadets. He was the Squadron Commander of 130 cadets, the First Sergeant of 130 cadets and the Group Operations NCO of 1000 cadets. Kenneth was also the Basic Training Cadre Flight Commander of the #1 Flight in Basic 1998. He lettered in basketball at the USAFA and was a member of the Superintendent's list - recognizing the Dean's, Athletic and Military Lists. He continued his education at the Uniformed Services University in Bethesda, MD where he received his Doctor of Medicine.

T.J. Couch, Jr.

After graduating from Tampa Baptist Academy in 1990, T.J. earned a Bachelor's Degree in Communication from the University of South Florida. Couch is currently the Vice-President of the University Commercial Center and serves on the Board of Directors of both the Life Enrichment Center and the Museum of Science and Industry. He also directs the daily activities of the Couch Family Foundation, a grant-making charitable foundation that funds projects that improve the quality of the Tampa community.

Brian Wade

Brian attended our school for 8 years starting in 1982 when he was in second grade, until the end of his 9th grade year in 1989. During that time, the school changed its name from Spencer Memorial Baptist School to Tampa Baptist Academy. Brian attended Gaither High School and then the University of South Florida where he earned a B.A. in Communication, and met his wife, Marcela. Brian has been a financial adviser for 10 years, and has owned the Tampa Financial Group, Inc. for 5 years.

Reverend Stephen Ahrens

The valedictorian of the class of 1998, was welcomed as the new pastor at Wildwood Baptist Church. He earned his bachelor's degrees in both Christian studies and in interdisciplinary studies, as well as an associate in fine arts degree in theatre, from North Greenville College in Tigerville, South Carolina.

Nicolas Gagnon Nicolas

A native of Tampa, Florida graduated from Tampa Baptist Academy in May 2005. He enlisted with the Air Force and began basic training Sept. 13th, 2005 in Lackland AFB in Texas. While in basic training Nick was appointed Dorm Chief (the flight leader) over 44 Airmen. He received the ribbon for Expert Marksmanship, Honor Graduate Ribbon and the Top BMT graduate award (he ranked #1 out of 809 graduating airmen).

Yesenia Crespo

Yesenia was a member of the 2011 graduating class. She is representing USA in the Judo team junior division. She will be competing in Colombia against girls in her division from all over the world.
